The physics of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies

چکیده
We present a new model for the evolution of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies from first principles. show that depend on four ratios collectively describe metal equilibration timescale, production, transport, consumption, and loss. Our finds most galaxy are equilibrium at all redshifts. When normalized by diffusion, governed competition between radial advection, accretion metal-poor cosmic web. The naturally explains varying measured local spirals, dwarfs, high-redshift star-forming galaxies. use to study across redshift, showing gradient Milky Way-like has steepened over time, good agreement with both observations simulations. also predict redshift samples constructed using matched stellar masses abundances. shows massive transition advection-dominated accretion-dominated regime high low redshifts, which mirrors gravity-driven star formation feedback-driven turbulence. Lastly, we ultraluminous infrared (major mergers) inverted seen may not be equilibrium. In subsequent papers this series, observed relationship mass gradients, kinematics.

Why do high-redshift galaxies show diverse gas-phase metallicity gradients?
Recent spatially resolved observations of galaxies at z ∼ 0.6–3 reveal that high-redshift galaxies show complex kinematics and a broad distribution of gas-phase metallicity gradients. To understand these results, we use a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project, which include physically motivated models of the multiphase inte...
متن کاملStellar Metallicity Gradients in SDSS Galaxies
We infer stellar metallicity and abundance ratio gradients for a sample of red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)Main galaxy sample. Because this sample does not have multiple spectra at various radii in a single galaxy, we measure these gradients statistically. We separate galaxies into stellar mass bins, stack their spectra in redshift bins, and calculate the measured absorption-...
متن کاملMetallicity gradients and the matter distribution in elliptical galaxies
In this work I discuss on the basis of the instantaneous recycling approximation the possibility of determining a relation between matter distribution (luminous and dark) in elliptical galaxies and the metallicity distribution. Two different contexts are considered depending on the behaviour of the gas velocity.
متن کاملMetallicity Gradients in the Intracluster Gas of Abell 496
Analysis of spatially resolved ASCA spectra of the intracluster gas in Abell 496 confirms there are mild metal abundance enhancements near the center, as previously found by White et al. (1994) in a joint analysis of Ginga LAC and Einstein SSS spectra. Simultaneous analysis of spectra from all ASCA instruments (SIS + GIS) shows that the iron abundance is 0.36 ± 0.03 solar 3− 12′ from the center...
متن کاملGas metallicity diagnostics in star-forming galaxies
Generally the gas metallicity in distant galaxies can only be inferred by using a few prominent emission lines. Various theoretical models have been used to predict the relationship between emission line fluxes and metallicity, suggesting that some line ratios can be used as diagnostics of the gas metallicity in galaxies. However, accurate empirical calibrations of these emission line flux rati...
